History of the Brahma Kumaris in Australia

The first Brahma Kumaris (BK) centres in Australia were opened in 1975 in Sydney and in 1977 in Melbourne. Today there are activities across Australia in the capital cities as well as several regional areas.

During the 1980s and 90s a diverse BK community developed and at the present time regular students continue to come from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds.

The BKs are active in the community, for example, sponsoring the Peace Pavillion at the Sydney Festival and also at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The main activity of the BKs is to offer a range of courses free of a set charge to schools, universities, hospitals, women's and youth refuges, businesses and other organisations.

In 1996 the first BK Centre for Spiritual Learning was opened in Frankston South in the Mornington Peninsula region in Victoria. In New South Wales two other such centres were subsequently opened: one in the Blue Mountains in Leura and the other in the Illawarra region in Wilton, near Picton. All three Centres offer one-day and weekend residential programs by qualified facilitators who are experienced meditation teachers. The Centres offer other short courses, lectures and seminars.

BK centres have offered and continue to offer regular meditation courses and have welcomed thousands of people from diverse backgrounds and professions who come to restore to their lives balance and focus through the study pof spiritual values and by experiencing inner peace and silence through the practice of meditation.
